“The Private ArtTalk” is an online video show about “sex and gender” and arts, which tries to combine gender and art theory, art creations, historical and current incidents, and social cultures, to raise the audience’s “sex and gender” awareness and knowledge of art.
The show takes a light-hearted approach to discuss how “sex and gender” is portrayed in Chinese and Western art through the lenses of self images and gender roles, bodily developments and mental states, interpersonal relationships and love and marriage, popular cultures and social systems, morals and ethics and legislation, conservatism and liberalism. The audience will learn about the culture, lifestyle and values of different historical periods, how they relate to art, society and their own selves, and be ultimately self-assured. Through the discussions, we hope to highlight the impact and importance of awareness of “sex and gender”.
The preview version of “The Private ArtTalk” has totally four episodes, based on four key terms in the “sex and gender” theory (including “biological sex”, “social gender”, “gender identity” and “gender expression”). The program attempts to combine art theory and creations, history and current conditions, as well as social cultures, in order to offer the audience a basic understanding of the theory. We plan to create more videos on the related topics in the future.
The first episode interprets the meaning of “biological sex” by introducing ancient genital murals and ancient Greek culture and statues. Through comparing the interpretation of male and female artists on the same subject, and “Venus of Urbino” and “Olympia”, the program also describes the role of women in traditional art. Together with the depiction of some contemporary artworks, this episode expresses the views of some people on inherent gender attitudes as well.
The second episode starts with the story of Bruce Reimer (a boy who was forced to become a girl), which unfolds the origins of the patriarchal society and talks about how it affects our occupation division, personal life and behaviors. Such concepts are further elaborated through works like “Oath of the Horatii” and abstract expressionism. The program also shares works of artists like Judy Chicago and Andy Warhol to reflect people’s dissatisfaction against the system.
The third episode talks about the relationship between gender identity and biological sex reference to the works of artists (like Claude Cahun) and a cross-gender dance named “Lengger”; it also narrates the uncertainty and non-necessity of the “gender” framework, through the origins of “one-sex model” and “two-sex model”. Apart from sharing works about transgender and cross-dressing, the program also aims at pointing out personal clothing choices are not necessarily related to gender identity.
The forth episode portrays how the values of mainstream society affect the gender expression of individuals with the work of Richard Hamilton and the story of Mary Cassatt. The program also encourages the audience to contemplate on how we should express or perform “ourselves” by sharing stories of some “rebellious” female artists (like Pan Yuliang, Artemisia Gentileschi), and the artworks of Cindy Sherman and Kazuo Ohno, the master of Butoh.
The fifth episode tells the history of gays and lesbians being persecuted and oppressed through the two common gay symbols "triangle" and "rainbow flag". The program also shares related works of some artists (like Richard Grune, Keith Haring and Gran Fury) to deepen the audience's understanding of the past and the current situation.
